Nintendo recently announced Pokemon GO, A Free-to-play app for both iOS and Android that allows you to see VR Pokemon on your phone depending where you are. The app works by tracking your location and directing you to a nearby address using a google map type system, here you will find a Pokemon sitting still and from here you try your best to catch it with Pokeballs. The free to play element comes in when you run out of Pokeballs or decide you want a better quality ball to increase capture rate. The game is being developed by Nintendo, Game Freak the guys behind the original Pokemon games and Niantic a company known best for its GPS work in apps.
This idea remind me a lot of a different app called GEOCASH where people would fill a tiny box with a mini note pad to sign your name and a few small trinkets, players would follow directions and clues to find the box once at the location and put the box back where you found it once finished signing.. but as you can guess people stole the boxes or hid them very very very well. The map system used for this app wasn't too great and I just have high hopes Niantic don't make the same mistake of making the location too vague and hard to follow or the gimmick will wear of very soon.
So what else can you do with Pokemon GO? Well there's a few things that were highlighted in the trailer shown and they were trading, battling and special social events. Trading allows you to complete your Pokedex collection by swapping your spare Pokemon with your friends to get the ones you couldn't find. It works similar to the original Pokemon game trading system where you must give 1 to get 1 so this means you will have to make pointless journeys to catch Pokemon you already have. So good luck finding all those Zubats!
Battling Pokemon on the app wasn't shown to clear in the trailer, CGI Pokemon flying around the screen wasn't enough information to determine f you would control Pokemon the same was as the original games or if it would be an automated test of strength and level to decided who dies first. Not much information was given about this but we'll keep you posted if more details arise.
And the Social events? This was shown to us by a real life clock telling us its time to defeat MewTwo and we only have 10 hours to do so! This feature works the same way as Peter Molyneux's Curiosity -you remember that load of nonsense about a massive prize?- Where players will help each other to whittle down the targets health and if completed in the time limit those who helped will receive prizes and add-ons to help them in game.
We'll keep this post updated when we find out more details about the game so be sure to subscribe to the blog and follow us on Twitter for our latest updates or Like us on Facebook to enter our giveaways!
